Barts and The London Charity
Barts and The London Charity, on behalf of the Trauma Unit at The Royal London Hospital, is the primary beneficiary of the Lord Mayor's Appeal 2012. The Trauma Unit treats patients with multiple injuries resulting from road incidents, falls, assault and gun/knife crime.
Trauma is defined as a disease caused by physical injury to the body. Trauma patients typically have serious and multiple injuries. The Royal London Trauma Unit sees over 2,000 patients a year, more than any other unit in the UK. Of these 70% are young male adults. The multidisciplinary team within the Unit has pioneered and refined trauma care, and its patients have a 38% greater chance of survival following major trauma.
The Unit will use part of the money raised from The Appeal to purchase a revolutionary portable CT scanner for the intensive care unit, which will be one of only three in the UK.
Any money raised above the cost of the scanner will fund clinical and translational research, crucial to developing new ways of diagnosing and treating trauma patients and giving The Appeal a nationwide legacy.
